Matthew 8:23-27 KJV And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! This passage is a great one, because in it shows that Jesus was God and He was man. With this passage we see Him as man when He was asleep in verse 24. This is good to know because Jesus can understand how we feel when we are so tired from taking care of our responsibility. For you could be a single parent that is working 2-3 jobs or even more, and you go to work with heavy eyelids and you come home with heavy eyelids. You just want to sleep, but you have to get your children ready for school. You are just so tired that you feel that no one understands you, but if anyone understands being tired from working all day it is definitely Jesus. In Mark 1:21-35 it gives an idea of what Jesus did from sundown to sunup. “And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee. And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.” Mark 1:21-35 ESV For in that passage Jesus was serving from sunup to sundown. He was preaching the word. He was healing people, and He cast demons out of people. He was so busy, that one might understand Him wanting to sleep in one morning. However we do not see that in verse 35. We see Him getting up before the sunrises to quiet place to pray to His Father. Many times throughout the Gospel we hear Jesus referring to God as His Father, and we hear His Father refer to Him as His Son. We read that at Jesus’ baptism, and we read that again in Jesus’ Transfiguration. Jesus being baptized is recorded in all four gospels, and His Transfiguration is in Matthew, Mark, and Like. All of these events in His life reveal to us He was God as well as man at the same time. Going back to the passage that is in the beginning of this post which I said it reveals that Jesus is man with Him sleeping in the boat while a storm is happening and that it shows Him being God. We see Him being God when He rebuked the storm. For only God can have that kind of authority over creation that He created. Therefore in this passage we see that Jesus is man and God.
